How To Use TightVNC with Multiple Monitors

Hi all,

I've just joined the group! I have configured a CentOS 6.4 x64 server
with tigervnc-server-1.1.0-5.el6_4.1.x86_64 and am using it on a Windows
7 client machine with TightVNC Viewer for Windows, version 2.7.3. All
is working well so far.

I would like to be able to use all of my monitors though with TigerVNC.
I have three monitors attached to my computer:

1) 1200 x 1600
2) 1920 x 1200
3) 1920 x 1200

I haven't figured out how I can use more than one of my monitors with
TightVNC. When I open multiple TightVNC sessions (one for each
monitor), they are just mirrors of each other. What I want is a big
desktop that covers my three monitors. Note that my monitors are not
all the same size or orientation. Windows Remote Desktop (mstsc.exe)
allows connecting to multiple monitors, even when differently sized.
I'm wondering if this is something possible in any way with TigerVNC.

With my 3 monitors, can anyone share how to get maximal use of my
monitors when connecting to a server? Even if not a perfect, I'd
appreciate anything that helps me to have more than just one monitor to use.

Thanks!

Enjoy,

Steve,

A couple of years back I was using VNC on my office workstation which had
two screens. I don't recall what version of VNC server I was running.

I was running Ubuntu 8.x with KDE.

What I found was that if I didn't specify a geometry, the VNC server
defaulted to a resolution of (fuzzy memory here) something like 3360x1200.
In other words, it treated the two screens as one really wide screen.

At home I would log in with a much smaller single screen and would then
scroll back and forth as needed to see the different sections of the
larger macro-screen.

I don't know what yours would do, but it might be interesting to start the
VNC server without a geometry parameter and see what that gives you.

Hi Arfin and all,

In my /etc/sysconfig/vncservers on my CentOS 6.4 x64 server, I have just:

VNCSERVERS="1:firstuser 2:seconduser"

I am not specifying any geometry at all. I have 3 monitors (one
1200x1600 and two 1920x1200) and I would ideally like to use all of them
when I connect to the server. The server, by the way, is in a server
farm... it is not physically connected to any real monitor (aside from
the Dell remote access controller that is used typically only during
provisioning or maintenance).

When I connect to a Windows computer, I use remote desktop (mstsc.exe)
and it automatically allows me to use all of my monitors whatever their
sizes might be. The server I connect to does not need to have any
specific geometry settings so that clients can use whatever monitors
they might have attached to them. I was hoping that using VNC to
connect to a CentOS server would give me the same kind of user
experience. I want to utilize whatever monitors might be available on a
client computer when I connect to a server computer via VNC.

So, I'm hoping someone can explain how to do this. Even if I'm able to
connect just two of my three client monitors that would be better than
being limited to just one client monitor.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Enjoy,
